And now on to the article!
The first day of fall, or the “Autumnal Equinox” for 2008, falls (no pun intended) on Monday, September 22nd. (and for those who can never get enough information, or are Jeopardy Junkies, it occurs at 11:44:16 EDT)
Fall has always been my favorite time of year. It’s hard to explain why, but I’ll give it a shot. To me, fall seems as if it is a time of slowing down. The slowing of our frenzied life of summer, when the eve’s begin to get cool. It’s a time for opening the window while you’re sleeping and listening to the crickets instead of the hum of the heater or the air conditioner. It’s a time of balance, where the world stands still for a moment, the moment between growth and death. It’s a maturing time, when the soil seems to hold a special loam and the richness of the leaves and even the air that we breath has a musky yet snappy smell, that tells you “time has passed and the world is about to sleep.”
Fall is a respite between the hot day’s of summer and the bone chilling day’s of winter, where everything seems to be in balance. It helps you prepare for the breakneck speed of the upcoming holiday season, while affording you the opportunity to drink that hot cup of spiced apple cider.
Fall is a time of wandering the pumpkin patch for that special big one, and apple orchard’s for hand picked “Grannys” that will make a wonderful pie. It’s the best time of year to do what my wife and I love to do, which is hike. (which is just another word for getting out there and enjoying the beauty of nature) unfettered by sweat and bugs.
It’s the time to rake leaves, which is just anouther way of “starting fresh.” It’s a time for replenishing the pantry with hardy vegetables that will be turned into crock pot stews. It’s a time when the twilight arrives early and you can walk the neighborhood in the dark at 6:00, unencumbered by loud music, traffic and lawnmowers.
Maybe that’s why I named this website “Twilight Earth.” I like the balance between light and dark. I like the quiet. I like the coolness that reminds me that I’m alive and I like promise that fall gives us. “I’m getting ready to leave now, but I’ll be back. I promise.”
Thanks for stopping by. (and thanks to all you stumblers for supporting the environment.) Please look around and feel free to comment or share some of you’re own knowledge with myself and others, and as always, keep up the good fight and Alter the Eco!
Adam’s reading for the day: Biodynamic Treechange. An excellent article on Honey Bees in Australia.

Hi. I just want to say that I also care very much about the environment, and am too a nature/animal lover. Fall is another side of our beautiful and never-ending nature, where the leaves turn red orange and yellow, and the image is just beautiful and stunning, even perhaps abstract as the paintings.
But the sad thing is that only few places in the world have views that are beautiful and serene with crickets and nightingales singing in a non-polluting environment, with rivers and streams running down gently that brings you to sleep. This all seem to be in a fairytale, yet they are as real as pollution and destruction of wildlife. We are living in a beautiful dream right now, but for how long will the dream last?
Emilie 09.22.08 at 12:46 am
To me Fall is like getting all tucked into a comfy bed and feeling a cozy warmth inside great enough to last through the long night of winter till the sun of spring rises.
Aaron 09.22.08 at 1:38 am
Nice, warming thoughts, but you should really spellcheck or edit - especially since many people will read this page today. Plurals are s only, not apostrophe ’s’ which denotes possession and you have quit a few other spelling mistakes.
Volker 09.22.08 at 2:52 am
Hello,
I could not have said it nicer or better.
You are right, the fall (autumn in Europe :-)) is a beautiful season. I think what I like are the cobwebs and the cold air in the morning. Everything seems to be much slower, more peaceful. As if the world goes to sleep for a few months.
On the other hand, when the sun comes out, things are getting warmer and nicer and the vibrant colours let you enjoy nature in a very special way.
What a lovely time!

We don’t care about the environment or this planet. We just want cheaper gas prices! You’re stupid and this crappy blog is full of shit.
Nivi 09.22.08 at 3:59 am
HI ,This is a nice article on fall…i like it very much…each and every line on fall made me to njoy this fall more and more with spirit..thanks…keep on posting …
Adam Shake 09.22.08 at 4:37 am
Nivi,
Thanks for the comment. I hope you have a great fall season. I’ll keep on posting. You keep on reading, o.k.?
Adam Shake 09.22.08 at 4:41 am
Phato,
This blog has nothing to do with cheaper gas prices. In fact, if you read some of the articles, you’ll see that I advocate higher gas prices.
There is a difference between being stupid and being ignorant. Being stupid is when you know the truth and refuse to accept it. Ignorance is when you dont know, or have not been taught the truth. I’ll admit that there are some subjects to which I am ignorant. (brain surgery?) But I’m not stupid.
Thanks for posting though.

Great comment, and like you, I could not have said it better. Thanks for posting. And thanks for the link-back. I’ll check out you’re site today.
Have a great day, and enjoy the season,

Aaron,
You are so right. My apologies on the grammar. I hated grammar in school. (No excuse)
Have a great day,

Emilie,
What is it about the cold that actually makes you look forward to snuggling down in bed? You’re right, it feels great.
Thanks for the comment,
Adam

Anonymous,
That’s why we have to do everything we can, to keep from killing our natural habitat. We all suffer when we lose a few of the wonderful things nature brings, every day. It happens slowly, so we don’t really notice, but it ads up quickly.
Thanks for the great comment,
Adam

Aaron, Please check your spellings too….Quit is a different word than quite and quiet.
Usages:
“Quit” - Please quit correcting other people. Its offensive (sometimes).
“Quiet” - When we are not sure, we should be quiet.
“Quite” - Plurals are s only, not apostrophe ’s’ which denotes possession and you have quite a few other spelling mistakes.
Nidhi 09.22.08 at 5:48 am
Beautiful thought for such a wonderful seasonal bliss. I really wish I could see it myself too!
Troy 09.22.08 at 6:36 am
Aaron - That’s “quite”, not “quit”
marakie 09.22.08 at 6:41 am
People, let’s not find the need to insult, out of boredom. Today is, a beautiful day. We are all fortunate enough, to witness another change in season. The Fall Equinox is a time to appreciate all of our blessings, that Spring, and Summer have brought. Early Fall does allow us to relax, before the holidays. A time to chill, ha ha. A time to smell the beautifully aged earth. A time to see all of the brilliant colors, throughout, our now shorter days. Being that natural light, gives us to ability to witness, Fall’s true colors. A time to eat and drink something warm, and tasty. A time to hear the neighborhood slow down. Oh, and most pleasing, a time to cuddle up, with our families, pets, and friends. So today I wish you all a Happy Fall, with good health and prosperity. Don’t forget to write down, all of what you wish to create, come next Spring.
That Girl 09.22.08 at 6:57 am
Adam, I come from a country that is about 14 degrees (latitude) away from the Equator, so obviously, I had no knowledge about Autumn/Fall until I moved to North America. I love Fall because of the beautiful colors and the cool breeze, which we almost never got back home because it was hot all year round.
I want to encourage you to keep posting beautiful posts like this. It is encouraging to see that someone still has a beautiful heart; even with all the negativity around us today. Great job.
PS: Ignore the haters

WOW! 09.22.08 at 7:16 am
First, “I don’t stop rushing long enough to think about the seasons very often.” You’ve managed to slow me down just enough to actually consider Fall and I appreciate it for its beauty. Aaron, you are certainly one to talk, you misspelled the word “quite.” Hello, Pot? “This is the kettle, your black!” Hehheh, enough said. Nice thoughts on Fall all the same.
Laurrie 09.22.08 at 8:01 am
Thanks for sharing…
Back to work today but not wanting to give up on the bliss of the weekend I’ve had. The photos are great.
Alon 09.22.08 at 8:30 am
good description of why we all like fall so much…
Dana 09.22.08 at 8:59 am
Please don’t nit-pick someone’s spelling or use of period, commas, etc. He’s stated he is not an english major. If you are OCD/ADD on spelling, grammer mistakes invite me over to write on your white board. I will give you a stroke.
Nice posting Adam and nice pictures. It Reminds me of childhood days when fall would roll in and mom would roll out the hot chocolate with marshmellows. As you grow older sitting around enjoying the brisk mornings of silence smelling the marshmellows melting gives one the feeling of everything is at peace for that one brief moment.
i feel a stroke coming to those OCD english majors.

I love Fall too and while I live in CT, I do enjoy the colors and beauty.
evrytime i like people loving the falls - a question goes through my mind of why not love Spring more than Falls ..
Pls don’t take me wrong _ i myslef like Autums but Spring is a ray of Hope, with everything blossoming and almost equal weather as Autum .. then why this partiality

What a beautiful, gloriously apt description of autumn.
pjl 09.22.08 at 9:59 am
Fall is also my favorite time of year. Unfortunately the joy of sleeping with the windows open and listening to the crickets is no longer an option since the spreading popularity of neighboring “outdoor fireplaces”. Fresh air has been replaced by the smell of smoke. Unlike real fireplaces with chimneys high above windows these nuisances are at or below window level so the smoke will find its way into any open windows in its path. These things should be outlawed.

So much beauty dwells under the autumnal sun. Autumn is undoubtedly my favorite season. It’s this time of year when I like to go out into the wilderness and appreciate life and everything around me. It’s when one can see the true serenity of solitude. Nothing can surpass the atmosphere that autumn possesses.

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALLLLLLL!
Anonymous 09.22.08 at 11:00 am
I quite agree with you Aaron… Fall is a wonderful time of the year full of surprises and much more wonderful items of interest. It is a tome of rebirth in which the earth is “reborn” and the plants and animals which inhabit the earth tend to be much more peaceful and respective of other beings. It is a time of understanding that we can all appreciate

hey…We(myself and colleague) just wanted to stop by and say that we(myself and colleague) are extremly offended by this outrage! We(myself and colleague)happen to live in Florida where it still feels like summer. Please note when you say that fall seems to be a time when things start slowing down that there are places that are always slow such as Slocala,FL or maybe places that are always fast such as Miami,Fl where people speek so quickly that you myself and my colleague would not be able understand them(the “illeagal”citizens of miami). Also we(myself and colleague)have not seen a single pumpkin much less a pumkin “patch”.To go on,we (myself and colleague)DO NOT apprieciate you telling us that it is time to rake our leaves.Myself and colleague do not want to disturbed the leaves by scrapeing them into piles and then choving them into giant black bags! We(myself and colleague) believe the leaves should be able to rest in peace.IN conclusively we(myself and colleague)believe that you are in the wrong by lieing and would appreciate an apology for your ludicrous action. sincerly,
myself and colleague

So what if someone spells something incorrectly? We’re not being graded here, people tend to type faster than they think and hey, you miss a letter every now and again, so what? This is a blog, how you are better than anyone else that you have to point out everyone else’s faults? Nice to do to people when they’re in a good mood trying to enjoy the lovely Fall day. Artard.

Nice article Adam. I hope you are well.
The fall in Michigan is a beautiful time of year.
Who would have thought that an article like this would have evoked such a broad variety or responses.
Fitzy! (for those of you who don’t know) Fitzy and I go way back.
Laura and I are doing great, I hope you are doing well also. You’re right, the response is pretty interesting isn’t it?
Take care of yourself Fitz,

One can just feel the love on this site! Keep it up fall-gawkers and assorted butt-patters, but be advised that the latest evidence suggests that this Adam guy doesn’t have much of a butt at all. Those in-the-know claim that he keeps a tri-fold wallet in one rear pocket and a German-to-English phrase book in the other. All to fatten-up his posterior’s appearance. In other words – he can’t feel your encouraging caresses. Still, I know he appreciates the sentiment, as he is growing sentimental in his dotage.
Fall is my favorite time of year also. Although, as a kid, I used to get pimples in the fall. A friend of mine had an older sister who was a cosmologist and she said that “fall blemishes” were common because the skin was acclimatizing. She was right I guess, even if that remark makes no freaking sense.
Anyway, Adam, Captain Bligh called and he says that you haven’t answered his most recent post. When he suggested to me that you were keeping mute because you didn’t know what you were talking about, I castigated him, remarking that you were surely reading something else he wrote – something even more pressing than your pending remarks about embodied carbon in automobiles. Hearing this, Bligh said he didn’t think so as he hadn’t gotten any kind of conformation that you had even received his work. It is a good thing that both you, I, and Sky-God know that Bligh is a liar.
Jon,
Please tell the Captain that I did indeed receive his writing, but because he is writing on a newer version of word, I had to download a conversion program. Luckily it didn’t crash his hard drive, but is sitting on his bed stand with lots of red marks all over it.
As far as responding to his last comment, I am still trying to figure out where he got the calculator, out there in the woods.
Tell him for me, will you, that I’ll call him soon.
Adam

Betsy 09.22.08 at 1:16 pm
Happy first day of fall! (Wish I was there)
First of all, a good friend of mine is dyslexic, andanother friend is ADD and a relative of mine has OCD. So I strongly resent the careless disregard for people with true disabilies. Just kidding!! Not kidding about the poeple I know with these disabilities, but I’m sure that even they would say that all of ya’ll with the insults and criticism need to chill out or go to a site where mean and crabby people are the major contributors to the discussion. Or maybe ya’ll should switch to decaf. Either way please “quite” taking a crap on people’s attempt to appreciate something nice about the world.
On a more positive note…What a great photo (the 2nd one) of the river and trees!!
I grew up in New England and we had great fall foliage up there. So I always and forever will associate fall with all the gorgeous colors, the sound of crickets at night being replaced with the sound of strong breezes through the trees (and the “showers” of leaves that follow the wind), and that unique smell of the leaves that have already fallen. I love all those things that you can only see in the states that get a “real” fall. (And please don’t whine at me for describing the things that I associate with fall. It all depends on where you’ve lived and what you’re used to and what you love about the change of seasons or lack thereof.)
When I was a teenager we moved to NC, where there’s still some good fall foliage, but nothing like New England, unless you take a trip to the Smokey or Appalacian mountains — just gorgeous!! That photo with the river is JUST like the Carolina mountains in the fall!! NC has a great state fair in the fall, complete with things like a “biggest pumpkin” contest, and the latest state fair invention — fried Snickers Bars. Yum?
I recently moved to the Southwest for a job, and every fall I miss all those things I associate with fall… I love the cold weather, but my Southwestern friends hate the cold and love the onset of summer. Everyone’s got their own things that bring them joy, so I’ve asked my mother to send me a box of leaves in the mail just so I can get a tiny bit of what fall means to me.
And I’ll soon be setting my screen saver to some fall foliage photos.
Hoping all you New Englanders have a wonderful fall, and please jump in a pile of leaves for me!!

Great description of fall!
Don’t forget apple desserts! Today I went out and bought an apple log (an apple sweet pastry). I can’t wait to eat it tonight for dessert with apple cider while I’m watching pre-season hockey!

Oh how I love the fall! The temp is just right for wearing my favorite attire: blue jeans and a sweat shirt. I adore all of the colors of folliage, homemade soup and ya can’t forget the over sized bowl of chili while watching the football game! Beautiful post Adam!
Betsy 09.22.08 at 3:00 pm
On an “Eco” note - autumn leaves make great compost!! And it turns out that if you neglect to rake any of your leaves, the grass still grows back perfectly fine the next spring. My housemates and I “tried” that one year (we got very busy and the landlord didn’t come by to leaf-blow as usual). We raked the front just for aesthetics, and composted the leaves, but left the backyard alone. I actually think the grass in the back looked better the next spring. And since the landlord uses a gas leaf-blower it was just as well he didn’t come by :).
Don’t forget to jump in your pile of leaves before you dispose/compost them !!!

When did this blog become a freakin’ English class? Who gives a rat’s smelly balls about the spelling or punctuation? You knew exactly what they meant, that’s why you tried to show them the correct word. If you knew the word just continue reading– not stop and be a critic. The world is full of critics and lawyers, let’s do without some and blow up the others!
Paul 09.22.08 at 4:28 pm
I love fall as well. Its the best time of the year. I was reading the blog entries when I came upon some guy ranting about spell checking and S and and ‘S….., WTF…, its a blog not a literally prose. Get over it dude, unbunch those panties he’s got in a wad and enjoy FALL!!!!, spell check that!

I followed the Google fall link here, and want to say thanks for your comments on this day. Fall is probably my favorite season too. There is something a tad melancholy about it, but also something just right in balance, with the first cold snaps, and the alternating between cooler and warmer weather coming in, and that leaves turning and dropping.

I do not like fall, i do not like winter, and i do not like spring that much, i only like the two weeks i have here in the summer where the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees.
I love living in the tropics, life takes no breaks, what is growing there has been growing non-stop for ages, untouched by the cold hand of arctic air flows.
Dan Copeland 09.22.08 at 10:08 pm
Fall sucks. It is a time to remind you of the upcoming death of nature, the harsh, biting -20 degree weather that’s about to come claw at you coming home or going to work. Need I inform you that I am a communications contractor, and often work outside in open construction areas, so it is a big turn-off for me. Spring is better. The beautiful rebirth of nature with the promise of swimming, grilling, and vacations around the corner.
Oryxy 09.22.08 at 10:10 pm
Wow! Just posted some yesterday and look at how many more comments are now today!
Fall is wonderful… Today as I was walking home from school, I saw the flies hovering in the air, shone by the warm afternoon sunlight with maple trees and bushes as background. Very stunning and peaceful view. Yes the world is going to take a rest for all the pollutions and disasters in the world. (China Milk… Greedy ppl… saw some ugly images in this beautiful season… how sad)Hope that problem will fall and from its ashes shall arise a new order that will shake the very foundation of the world… *warcraft*
